If you’ve ignored career experts’ advice to be careful about what you post on social networks, like Facebook and LinkedIn, this new survey may frighten you.

In a survey of some 2,300 hiring managers, nearly 40 percent said they screen potential hires using social media, and many say they reject job applicants as a result of what they find, according to a new survey released Wednesday by CareerBuilder.

Candidate drinking or using drugs — 45 percent
Candidate had “poor communication skills” — 35 percent
Candidate bad-mouthed a previous employer — 33 percent
Candidate made discriminatory comments related to race, gender or religion — 28 percent

SMEs not making effective use of social media

By Holly Jones

Smaller businesses are struggling to effectively use social media and the internet in general for marketing purposes.

New research from IFF Research, the SME Omnibus, has revealed that of 500 small business owners surveyed, just five percent said that they were using Facebook to market their business online, and that they were fully exploiting the social networking site.

Respondents were more likely to think that LinkedIn was useful for generating sales (18 percent) although fewer (three percent) said they were using it to its fullest effect. For Twitter, the figures were very similar – 17 percent said they thought it was a useful tool but only four percent were using the social networking site effectively.

Mark Speed, managing director of IFF Research, said: “People are still debating how useful social media is as a business development tool and it will not always be the right route for every company. However, there is a striking divide between those who say that a site is effective for generating leads and the number who seem to be taking advantage of this.”

He added: “There are some relatively quick wins, such as keeping company websites up to date with information designed…

I am So Mad About Social Non-Marketing

Well, I not really mad, amused maybe, but would like to clarify. Ok, we have all heard it before “social media is for making connections, not for marketing products.” Please. President Obama sells his economic and political agenda on Facebook and Twitter, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears sell their concerts, on social channels, Coca-Cola sells well, Coke. Facebook and Linkedin have advertising programs, (good ones), that you can use for display ads. And on and on. Yes the embryonic social media space is fully commercialized. It’s as commercial as magazines, television, newspapers, billboards, radio and cocktail napkins, (well the ones with ads on them). So forget about a non commercial social media channel. But as Buffalo Springfield would say “something’s happening here, what it is ain’t exactly clear.” So, let’s wipe off the windshield and try to make some sense of it.

1. GOOGLE+ JOINS THE FRAY – Expect to see more and more social channels emerge, most will fail (although not Google+), so focus on what has critical mass today. That would be Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Linkedin. Rule number 1 – Focus.

2. READ YOUR TOC’S – Build a great page, fan base or whatever and then get…

I Google+ circled, followed, liked, linked, bookmarked you, now what?

by Pam Moore
Wow, is it me or is it starting to be more and more steps to follow someone.

We round em’ up in circles. We click the Facebook like, send and share buttons. We accept or invite them to LinkedIn. And if they’re lucky we may even opt-in to their email list via their blog or website.

So now that we have spent half a morning circling, liking, following and plussing people what will we do with all those we liked, followed, plussed and circled yesterday? Or how about the 15 we did the same thing to the day before? And the day before. And the day before that?

A tweet, Google+, or Facebook post grabs our attention. Within seconds we get lost in never ever ending like land.

But why do we like! Why do we circle? Do we really like them? Or do we circle them so they will circle us?

Our time is our greatest asset. Even the moments you spend roundin’ up peeps via clicks, like and circles should be spent wisely!

Do more than circle, like & follow. Are you reading what you like? Do you know or even like the person you…

LinkedIn Hikes IPO Price Range by 30%

LinkedIN
By LYNN COWAN

Professional networking site LinkedIn Corp. raised its price range for its initial public offering this week by 30%, a strong indication that demand is running high for the new stock.

The company, which is set to price Wednesday night and begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol LNKD on Thursday, had originally set out to sell 7.84 million shares at $32 to $35 apiece. In an updated filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Tuesday morning, the company set the range at $42 to $45.

The change boosts the company’s value by about $1 billion.

While companies sometimes raise their price ranges by as much as $3 to $4, a $10 increase is very uncommon. It’s a clear sign that investors are jockeying for shares ahead of the offering and are willing to pay far more than the company was originally asking in order to get a piece of the IPO.

The change values the entire company at roughly $4 billion, up from about $3 billion under the previous IPO terms.

LinkedIn is the go-to site for career networking and recruitment, and is seen as the first chance that investors will get to…
