Why You Should Give Your Work Away for Free

Whoa, wait, hold on a second. Sheathe your sword of value. Don’t go all cold-blooded capitalist on me. Hear me out.
Most entrepreneurs don’t do pro bono work. (By pro bono I don’t mean for charity, I mean for another entrepreneur.)
A friend swears “pro bono” is Latin for “no way.” He says, “I’m against the idea of anyone working for free. As a more colorful person said, there are two kinds of articles on Huffington Post: Those that shouldn’t be written at all, and those that are too good to give away. I don’t think anyone should give away their profession.”
You probably agree. You invested significant time and money into your business or profession. You provide value.
You should receive value in return.
But sometimes free is valuable.

At last, Bonnaroo organizers AC Entertainment and Superfly Presents have revealed the lineup for this year’s event. HT faves Phish and Radiohead are atop the bill and will each make their second headlining appearance at Bonnaroo. Google’s Motorola Bid Approved By U.S. Department Of Justice

SAN FRANCISCO — Google’s $12.5 billion bid to buy cellphone maker Motorola Mobility has won approvals from U.S. and European antitrust regulators, moving Google a major step closer to completing the biggest deal in its 13-year history.
Monday’s blessings mean Google Inc. just needs to clear regulatory hurdles in China, Taiwan and Israel before it can take control of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and expand into manufacturing phones, tablet computers and other consumer devices for the first time.
Getting government approval in China looms as the biggest stumbling block remaining. Google’s relationship with China’s ruling party has been on shaky ground since the company blamed hackers in that country for breaking into its computers two years ago. The breach prompted Google to move its Internet search engine from mainland China in protest of laws requiring some results to be censored.
Google prizes Motorola Mobility’s more than 17,000 patents – a crucial weapon in an intellectual arms race with Apple, Microsoft and other rivals maneuvering to gain more control over smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. Google announced the deal six months ago.

New Jersey Gay Marriage: State Senate Passes Bill Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

TRENTON, N.J. — In a move that supporters called a civil rights milestone, New Jersey’s state Senate on Monday passed a bill to recognize same-sex marriages, marking the first time state lawmakers officially endorsed the idea – despite the promise of a veto by Gov. Chris Christie.
Monday’s vote was 24-16 in favor of the bill, a major swing from January 2010, when the Senate rejected it 20-14.
“It means the world isn’t changing, it means the world has already changed,” Steven Goldstein, chairman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality said after the vote. “So wake up and smell the equality.”
Before the vote, Marsha Shapiro squeezed the hand of her longtime partner Louise Walpin, and reflected on how a body that rejected gay marriage two years ago was about to change its stance. “The pride will overpower the sorrow,” she said.
But opponents say it’s “an exercise in futility” even if the Assembly passes the bill Thursday as expected, given Christie’s veto vow.
Len Deo, president of New Jersey Family Policy Council, called the vote “something we have to go through” and said it would be made moot with a veto.
